“The Yangtze river dolphin….has been declared officially extinct” Guardian, Aug 8 2007

Once:

        the wet slap of a wake;

        a heron stoops like a sheathing sword;

        heartbeats echo in the water.

No longer we hear

tales of the dolphin princess

charmed to shore by Musheng,

a poet.

The message of our blood

is scrambled by screws

churning the mud of hearing.

Now

we come out of the water

to drown.
