January 2010

The Yorkshire Open Poetry Competition has a special prize for the best poem from a Yorkshire Poet. I heard yesterday that I’ve won it. Not only is that a great prize, but also the prize includes reading the poem (“Cavalleria Rusticana”)  in the fifteeenth century half-timbered building of St William’s College in York (27th Feb, if you’re interested): a fabulous location and a great opportunity.

Just received my copy of New Writer for Jan/Feb. Two poems of mine: “A stone’s dream” (and, wouldn’t you know it, the moment I saw it in print I realised it had a flaw) and “Anticipating Farewell”, which I like rather more.

But the interesting feature in this mag is the honour roll of contributors to date: it’s a surprisingly long list, and I’m surprised by how many names are familiar.
