October 2012

Had a good time at Hebden Bridge yesterday evening, receiving my little prize and witnessing the awards for the others (some great readings). I turned out I knew them all, bar one, which was a bit of a surprise, and almost all of us were from Yorkshire, though entries come from wide and far. Kathleen Jamie read some great pieces – I loved her slightly quizzical, slightly mischievous and very focused approach.

It seems I forgot to mention that I won second prize in the Sentinel Poetry competition earlier this year (http://www.sentinelquarterly.com/competitions/results.htm) , and I found out a couple of days ago that I’ve also won the Ted Hughes Yorkshire Poet prize, within the Elmet Poetry competition. It feels wonderful to have these successes in relatively quick succession. And to have an award in the name of Ted Hughes (to go with the John Clare second prize last year) is a pleasant feeling, too.
